چرا فراگیری اصطلاحات انگلیسی مهم است ؟

اصطلاحات (idioms) کلمات و عبارات ثابتی هستند کـه یـا از لحاظ گرامری غیرعادی هستند (مثل «Long time, no see!» و یا از این جهت که دارای معنیای هستند که نمیتواند از معانی کلمات تشکیل دهنده آن استخراج شود (مانند: It's raining cats and dogs!).

هر زبانی دارای اصطلاحات خاص خودش میباشد و اغلب فراگیری آنها برای زبانآموزها دشوار میباشد.

Sinking feeling = when you realize something bad is happening or about to happen.

Easy tiger = to calm down

Dragon = unfriendly and frightening

A wet blanket = one who spoils the fun
(آدم ضد حال)

To beard the lion in his den = to visit and oppose a person on his own ground

To give somebody the creeps = to make someone feels nervous or scared.

Sponger = person who gets money, food and other things from other people without paying money.

Corocodile tears = insincere tears

Throw a fit = to be very angry or shocked

Whizkid = a young person who is very skilled or successful at something

In the limelight = a situation in which someone receives a lot of attention, especially from newspapers, television, etc.

Scumbag = an unpleasant person of little value who has done something dishonest or immoral

State-of-the-art = using the most modern and recently developed methods, materials, or knowledge

Give somebody the benefit of doubt = to accept what someone tells you even though you think they may be lying

Hit rock bottom = to become as unhappy or unpleasant as it is possible

Call it quits =
a) to agree that a debt or argument is settled
b) to agree to stop doing something

Far and away = far and away used to emphasize that something or someone is definitely the best, most important of a group of similar things or people

For your eyes only = used to say that something is secret and must only be seen by one particular person

Swansong = the last piece of work or performance of a poet, painter etc.

Top of the line = used to say that something is the biggest, best, most extreme, etc. Of its kind

Put/keep the lid on something = to control a situation so that it does not become worse, or so that secret or private information does not become known (کنترل کردن اوضاع)

Run an errand = to make a short trip to take a message or buy something (سفر کاری)

Stake something out = to watch a place  secretly and continuously (یک جایی را پاییدن)

Go down =
1. To be sent to prison (زندانی شدن)
2. To happen (اتفاق افتادن)

Have an off day / week etc. = to have a day, week etc. When you are not doing something as well as you usually do

Push your luck = to risk doing something too much or too often, when it might cause problems, or to ask someone to do too much, when it might make them angry with you (شانس خودتو امتحان کن)
